Sinus Surgery, What Is It?

Sinus surgery is used to remedy chronic sinusitis that has not responded to other forms of treatment such as medication. Polyps, infected tissue and bone may be removed during the surgery to provide a healthier environment for the sinuses, so they are less likely to be infected in the future. The surgery is usually done endoscopically, which means that long, thin instruments are inserted through the nostrils into the sinus cavities.

This approach allows the surgeon to see inside the sinuses and remove tissue without making any large incisions. In some cases, a CT scan or MRI may be used to help guide the surgeon during the procedure.

Will I Need Time Off for My Sinus Surgery?

Most who have sinus surgery recover quickly and experience only mild discomfort afterward. However, there are a few things you can do to help ensure a speedy recovery including:

  • You will be bandaged with gauze under your nose, make sure to replace it as needed.
  • Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
  • Sleep with your head in an elevated position.
  • If your nose feels stuffy or filled, don’t be alarmed as this is normal.
  • Mild pain after the procedure is normal and will dissipate after the first week if not before.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure a quick and complication-free recovery from sinus surgery.

Sinus Surgery FAQ

Is sinus surgery painful?

One of the most common questions we get regarding sinus surgery is whether it will be painful. The answer to this question depends on several factors, including the type of surgery being performed and the individual patient’s pain tolerance. In general, however, patients can expect to experience mild discomfort after sinus surgery. This is typically controlled with medication, and most patients report that the pain is very manageable.

What happens after sinus surgery?

This will depend on the individual patient and the type of surgery being performed. However, in most cases, you will need to take it easy for a few days after surgery. During that time you may have some drainage from your nose. Additionally, it is important to avoid activities that could put pressure on the sinuses, such as blowing your nose or bending over.

Is sinus surgery worth it?

For most people, the answer is yes! Sinus surgery can significantly improve quality of life by relieving symptoms and restoring normal function. If you are struggling with chronic sinus problems, sinus surgery may be the best option for you.
