Thyroid masses can form due to an overgrowth of thyroid tissue, a cyst, an iodine deficiency, or in rare cases, cancer. Texas ENT Specialists can help patients determine the cause of the masses and create a treatment plan to address this.

Thyroid Mass Treatments

Before treatment, an examination and testing will be required to determine the reason for the mass, and to see if it is cancerous. In some cases, if the mass isn’t cancerous and doesn’t seem to be growing, no treatment is required. Other treatment methods include thyroid hormone therapy or a surgery in which the mass is removed. Some masses may require surgery if they are interfering with breathing or swallowing.

About Thyroid Masses

If the thyroid begins to grow, masses can form. The cause of this is not precisely known. These masses can often form in those with a family history of thyroid masses and those who do not get enough iodine. While thyroid masses may seem scary, they are rarely cancerous. Cancer is found in less than 5% of thyroid masses. There are a few types of masses which include:

Colloid Nodules

This is an overgrowth of thyroid tissue. They are non-cancerous and may grow to be quite large.

Thyroid Cysts

These growths are filled with fluid and can be partially solid.

Inflammatory Nodules

These can be associated with some pain. They typically occur after long-term inflammation of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid Cancer

This is rare, as less than 5% percent of masses are cancerous.
