Symptoms are usually persistent and can include a lump in the neck, a sore in the mouth or throat, and difficulty swallowing. Because these symptoms can also appear in less serious conditions, it is crucial to have a skilled provider evaluate them. At Texas Ent Specialists, we can help you identify these cancers, evaluate their progress, and recommend treatment options.

Evaluation and Treatment Options

The first step in any treatment plan is a proper evaluation and diagnosis. At Texas ENT Specialists, your testing may include a physical examination, blood or urine testing, endoscopy, or imaging such as an x-ray, CT scan, or MRI. The type of testing and treatment will depend on your symptoms and where the suspected cancer is located.

The goal of treatment will be to remove the tumor and the tissues that have been affected. This will stop the cancer from spreading, as well as stop the side effects that the cancer has created. Radiation treatment may also be used depending on the type of cancer.

Head and Neck Cancers

Head and neck cancers typically begin in the squamous cells that line the mucosal areas. This includes the mouth, throat, and voice box. This type of cancer is known as “squamous cell carcinomas” of the head and neck.

Other types of cancers can form in the salivary glands, nerves, sinuses, or muscles, but this occurs far less frequently. The most common areas for cancer in the head and neck include:

  • Oral cavities (including the lips, tongue, gums, cheeks, and mouth)
  • Throat
  • Voicebox
  • Nasal and sinus cavities
  • Salivary glands

Head and Neck Cancer Symptoms

The symptoms of head and neck cancer will vary based on the type of cancer it is. These symptoms may also be a sign of less serious conditions, but can still be a sign of cancer. They include:

  • Lump in the neck
  • Sore in the mouth
  • A change in the voice
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent sore throat
