Sleep apnea is a condition that causes a person’s breathing to be interrupted while they are asleep. When sleep apnea is left untreated, it can cause one to stop breathing as they sleep, sometimes multiple times a night. When this occurs, it stops the brain — and the rest of the body — from getting an adequate supply of oxygen. Texas ENT Specialists offers a sleep apnea test to both determine if you have sleep apnea, and to help you find the best possible treatment.

Your Sleep Apnea Test

Texas ENT Specialists offer several types of sleep apnea tests. The first is a “polysomnogram” or “sleep study”, which is a multi-part test.

During the test, you will sleep while connected to a medical device that records your specific physical activities. Surface electrodes may be placed on your face and scalp. The equipment will digitally record specific signals that are created by your brain and muscle activity.

A WatchPAT ONE test may also be used. During this test, you will wear a chest sensor attached to a wrist device. You will be able to connect the device to an app on your phone that will monitor you while asleep. After the sleeping portion of the test, the results will be analyzed by one of our highly-trained providers to determine if you have sleep apnea or a different sleeping disorder.

Conditions a Sleep Apnea Test Can Benefit

While a sleep apnea test can diagnose sleep apnea, it can also diagnose other sleep disorders. Those who snore may also benefit from testing, as they may not know they have sleep apnea.

Benefits of Sleep Apnea Testing

Sleep apnea can be dangerous without treatment. Because you can stop breathing at night, you can cut off the supply of oxygen to your brain. The first step in treating sleep apnea is knowing if you have it, and which type you may have. This is why testing for sleep apnea is so important. Once you have treatment for sleep apnea, both you and your partner or roommate will sleep better, and you’ll be able to rest easier.

Who Is a Candidate?

If you struggle with sleep apnea or another sleep disorder, you are most likely a candidate for the testing process. When you arrive for your appointment, our staff will meet with you to discuss your sleep habits and any sleep issues you may be experiencing. This will allow our providers to ensure a sleep test is necessary.

The Sleep Apnea Test Procedure

Before the test is administered, our providers will ensure it’s right for you and will provide you with any pre-test information. The test may be performed in our office, or in some cases, it may be done at home. If it’s done in the office, we will ask you to bring everything you need to sleep comfortably in one of our testing beds.

Before you fall asleep, the electrodes will be placed, and then you will then fall asleep. Once you wake up, you’ll be able to resume your normal activities while your results are examined. After the provider has conclusive results, they will contact you to discuss them.
