What is a Balloon Sinuplasty?

Before the development of the Balloon Sinuplasty, chronic sinusitis was usually treated first with medications, and if that didn’t achieve results, surgery. The Balloon Sinuplasty has forever changed how this condition is treated. The procedure involves expanding the blocked area of the sinuses by inflating a tiny balloon within the structure. It is inserted gently into the breathing passage to the area that is blocked, inflated, and then removed. The result is a widening of the passage, relieving congestion, and warding off the development of sinusitis by allowing for natural drainage.

What is the Treatment Experience?

You will discover that a Balloon Sinuplasty is reasonably easy to experience and doesn’t involve any major pain or discomfort. You will be resting comfortably on a reclined treatment chair, and IV sedation will be administered for total relaxation. The area to be treated will be numbed with local anesthetic, applied topically. A balloon catheter is then inserted into the breathing passage, and the tiny balloon then inflated to open the blocked area by the pressure of the balloon. Once complete, the area is flushed with saline to remove any remaining mucus or other material, the balloon is deflated, and the system removed. Most people notice an immediate change in their ability to breathe freely!

Is the Recovery From a Balloon Sinuplasty Difficult?

The recovery from this minimally invasive procedure is fast and uneventful, requiring about 24 hours. It can be helpful to sleep with your head elevated on an extra pillow so the structure can drain naturally. Avoid any vigorous physical activities such as exercise, running, or sports, and take the time to allow the area to settle into its expanded shape without stress.
