Summer is winding down and kids are headed back to school. The weather should be cooling down in the near months… Great news, right? Well, maybe not for everyone.

Fall allergy season is typically due to high weed pollen counts, which are due to lower temperatures and shorter amounts of daylight. These factors trigger the maturation of weed pollens making you miserable. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis (aka: hayfever) can include sneezing, runny nose, post-nasal drainage and watery, itching eyes. To say the least, fall allergy season can be brutal for those who suffer from allergic rhinitis.

All of this sounds pretty glum, but thanks to the extensive experience of the TENTS physicians and allergy treatment team, we have compiled some tried and true recommendations to help you deal with your fall seasonal allergy symptoms.

  1. Start antihistamine and nasal steroid medications at least 3 weeks BEFORE your allergies start. Don’t delay getting stocked up on your selected meds and be diligent with them.
  2. Avoid obvious triggers- use local pollen counts to plan your outdoor activities
  3. If possible, avoid outdoor exposure to hours between ( ) when pollen counts are lower.
  4. Discuss your symptoms with your health care provider to establish if allergy immunotherapy (shots or drops) might be a good treatment option. Get diagnosed by a physician and knowing what your triggers are can make a huge difference- allergy testing is very effective at establishing this.
