At Texas ENT Specialists, we provide acid reflux testing to patients across Houston to determine if they have acid reflux heartburn or other gastroesophageal conditions. An esophageal pH test is used to help track the amount of acid moving into the esophagus from the stomach over a finite period of time.

How the Test Is Performed

In acid reflux testing, a small piece of equipment is inserted into the nostril and moved to the lower esophagus during the procedure. The probe may be attached to a cord that you will be able to wear, or a wireless device may be used. If the wireless device is used, it will be inserted into the esophagus using an endoscope. These devices will track, record, and transmit information about your pH levels. It will track your symptoms, as well as instances where you eat and lie down. You will use this device for 24-48 hours, and will be able to participate in most of your normal activities while being monitored.

What Can be Tracked Through This Test?

This test is designed to help identify the cause of specific gastrointestinal symptoms (such as heartburn) and to help confirm if you have acid reflux. Providers can also use the test to help track if your current treatment for heartburn or acid reflux is effective.

Your Testing Experience

During your visit to Texas ENT Specialists, you will be evaluated to see if the test is right for you. If you’re determined to be a candidate, you may be asked to stop taking certain medications for the duration of the test. You may also be asked to avoid eating or drinking for a few hours prior.

At your appointment, the device will be inserted and you’ll be able to immediately go about your regular activities. After the device has been worn for 24-48 hours, you will return to the office to have it removed. Your provider will then evaluate your results and help determine the next steps for treatment.
