What is a Bone Anchored Hearing Aid (BAHA)?

A BAHA is a hearing aid that transmits sound vibrations directly to the inner ear through the bone, bypassing the outer and middle ear. This technology is particularly beneficial for individuals who may not benefit from traditional hearing aids due to anatomical or medical conditions affecting the ear canal or middle ear.

How BAHA Works

The BAHA system consists of three main components:

  • Titanium screw: A small titanium post surgically placed in the skull bone behind the ear.
  • Connector: The middle component that transfers vibrations from the BAHA to the titanium screw.
  • Sound processor: The external part that captures sound and converts it into vibrations the brain can translate into sound or hearing.

Evaluating BAHA Candidates

Before recommending a BAHA, our team conducts a thorough assessment, including:

  • Audiological evaluation: Hearing tests to assess the type and severity of hearing loss.
  • Medical history review: Review of past medical conditions affecting the ears.
  • Imaging studies: CT or MRI scans to examine bone structure and implantation suitability.

Who is a Candidate for BAHA?

Candidates for BAHA typically include individuals who experience:

Conductive hearing loss: Difficulty hearing caused by problems in the outer or middle ear.
Mixed hearing loss: A combination of conductive and sensorineural hearing loss.
Single-sided deafness: Total hearing loss in one ear with normal or near-normal hearing in the other.

What to Expect During BAHA Surgery

BAHA surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure. Patients are placed under general anesthesia for comfort during the surgery. A small incision is made to place the titanium implant into the skull bone behind the ear. After the small screw is placed, the incision is closed with sutures.

Recovery After Surgery

You can return home the same day as your procedure to rest and start the healing process. In the first few days, it’s normal to experience some tenderness, swelling, or mild pain around the implant site, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication. Be sure to avoid touching or putting pressure on the area. Our ENT specialist will see you at a follow-up appointment to track your recovery. While complete healing can take 8 to 12 weeks, most patients can resume light activities within 10 days.
