Mary Es Beaver, MD, FACS
Dr. Mary Es Beaver is the director of the Texas Center for Voice & Swallowing. She is a board-certified Otolaryngologist and Laryngologist. She specializes in disorders of the vocal cords and throat, upper airway and swallowing disorders. From an early age, Dr. Beaver knew she would become a doctor. Her grandfather, W. Leland Anderson, inspired her. He was instrumental in acquiring some of the land that created the Texas Medical Center. He was a businessman that would have loved to be a physician. Her grandfather’s uncle, M.D. Anderson, also was committed to medicine and donated his entire estate to establish the cancer hospital that today “makes cancer history.” Dr. Beaver believes medicine is a calling and feels blessed to have been called to continue the legacy in the Texas Medical Center that her family began.
Dr. Beaver grew up in Houston. She completed medical school, her internship in General Surgery and her residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Dr. Beaver became interested in laryngology because of her love of singing and music. Following residency, she completed a fellowship in Laryngology and Professional Voice at the Van Lawrence Voice Institute at Baylor College of Medicine.
She has been actively involved in clinical research since her training and has authored numerous articles in the field of laryngology. Her special interests include laser surgery of the vocal folds, vocal cord spasm, and vocal cord paralysis.
Dr. Beaver is married to Richard Beaver, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in foot and ankle reconstruction. They have two children. Her outside interests include performing arts, music, and design. She has sung in a college rock band, a gospel choir, a classical church choir, and a contemporary Christian worship band.
